Two types of Roof tiling

Leading names such as Redland and Marley have dominated the market for the past few decades where they are most likely to be found as choices on many new housing estates across Britain. Roof tiles are generally split up in two types: interlocking roof tiles and the overlapping plain roof tiles.

Interlocking Roof Tiles

Interlocking roof tiles can either be machine made concrete tiles, machine made clay tiles or traditional handmade clay tiles. The profiles of these tiles vary tremendously and they can be laid on pitches as low as 12 degrees which can make them very appealing for the projects requiring a lower pitched roof. Traditional handmade clay tiles are most commonly used on barn conversions or listed buildings they are also very commonly used on farm buildings.

Overlapping Roof Tiles

Overlapping plain roof tiles can also be either machine made concrete tiles, machine made clay tiles or traditional handmade clay tiles. The sizes do vary but are usually around 250mm (10″) x 150mm (6″). As to be expected the handmade tiles are not universally shaped this gives an uneven look which can suit or be needed in some roofing applications such as barn conversions or country cottages. The machine made clay although universally made; some manufactures are producing tiles with slight different shapes in order to reproduce the look of a traditional but offering the peace of mind of a new tile. Concrete machine made tiles are very universal offering a more flat roofing look. Plain tiles are to be laid on pitches not less than 30 degrees.
